Lifetime Achievement: Flann McInerney Sixmilebridge Camogie

Flann McInerney is a man who once he gets involved in something, you are guaranteed that he will see it through. He is a proud sports person and his involvement in all things Camogie spans a period of almost five decades.

A native of Sixmilebridge, Flann has been a figure in Clare Camogie for a long, long number of years. He brings a quiet wit and passion which have over the years served both his Club and County well. Such is his love for Camogie both his children Niamh and Mark were inspired by their dads commitment and followed in his footsteps, getting involved in both Club and County teams.

Flann’s involvement in Camogie started in 1979 when the took on the Sixmilebrigde Junior team, they went on to win the Championship the following year in 1980 and he was part of the management that saw Sixmilebridge complete the 9 Senior titles in a row in the eighties.

In fact he has the honour of managing the only Clare club team Sixmilebridge to bring the coveted Thomais MhicDhonnacha Munster Senior Club Championship back to the Banner county.

Flann’s passion for managing teams and getting the best out of the girls spilled over to Inter County also and he has completed with no less than 6 different stints at Inter County management working alongside the likes of Kitty McNicholas, Trixie Toomey, Fr Michael McNamara and more recently he was on the management team with Trisha O’Grady who he had trained on that successful Sixmilebridge team.

Flann was a visionary for his time and was painstakingly efficient in how he managed the Club and County teams. He has been Chairman of his Club, his County Board and also Provincial Council. Such was Flanns wish for players to achieve their best, he also managed the Munster Camogie Gael Linn teams at both Junior and Senior level for a number of years.

Married for over 30 years to the lady that we all remember as the kind and caring individual Ann, we all supported Flann and his family at Anns untimely passing.

Flann is a family man and has spent more hours than he can remember on the sidelines, cheering on and encouraging his children and his god children!!

Flann is a true Gael, both Clare Camogie and Sixmilebridge Camogie club have been fortunate to have such a talent at their disposal over the 40 years.
