Saturday 29th of June saw the Sixmilebridge U10 hurlers host this round of the Go-Games blitz series with Clooney Quin, St Josephs Doora Barefield and Newmarket in attendance on a sunny morning Garney-side. Due to the large numbers of players between the four clubs clubs, this blitz was held in both O'Garney Park (where the 2009 born boys played) and Cappa Lodge (where the 2010 born boys faced off). With the 'Bridge fielding 4 teams between the two venues and the fact that a lot of players are away this time of year, several U8 players were called up to fill out the squad.

Proceeding got underway in both fields at 11am with each team in attendance playing 3 games over the morning.

Our squad have built up a lot of experience in these kind of blitzes in recent weeks and we are beginning to see this pay off with great movement of the ball out of rucks, plenty of lads taking their 4 steps with the ball in hand and breaking tackles and some great catches (and more importantly, lots of players making efforts at catching the ball). The visiting clubs also had some fantastic displays which shows us the benchmark is high across the board at this level. The U10 coaches have also put a big emphasis on all our players shaking hands with the opposition after the games and its great to see the boys showing respect to their opponents in this way.

We can't print a photo of the SMB U10 Yellow squad as negotiations for their image rights have not been finalized at this time (or perhaps because their coaches forgot to take a team picture!).

As is customary at these blitzes, food was provided in O'Garney Park by the parents of the Sixmilebridge squad. Going into the last game there was a high level of coordination between the two venues to ensure the games ended at the same time (and more importantly to ensure the tea and ham sandwiches weren't all gone by the time the teams playing in Cappa Lodge made it back the headquarters!).

To host a successful blitz like this thanks is due to a number of people

  • Our Catering Crew - Laura McInerney, Caroline Murphy, Claire McManus, Denise Gavin, Siobhan Madigan and Jennie Dowds
  • The Minor Club for providing the bags of treats to all players after the blitz.
  • John Corbett and Grace Fawl for arranging for us to have the facilities on the day
  • U10 parents for ensuring all players were kitted out appropriately in Sixmilebridge shorts and sock and for providing food on the day.
  • U10 coaches for organizing the blitz
  • Special thanks to Martin Conlon and his Under 8 crack troops who ably assisted their Under 9 club mates in Cappa Lodge.

Earlier in the week, the squad celebrated the hottest day of the year with some well earned icepops at last Thursdays training provided by DOC (the U10s very own JP McManus!) - mile buíochas DOC!

That rounds off a busy month of June for the U10 squad which included 2 Go-Games blitzes, 2 tournaments and the Community Games competition. The squad will continue to train through the summer though we will take several weeks off which we will announce soon.

There are two more Go-Games blitzes left this season (10 August and 7th September) but rest assured, the U10 coaches will be organizing plenty games for the boys from August on.
