Davy Fitzgerald feels he justified his selection on the 2005 All-Stars hurling team, despite the strong claims of Cork’s Donal Og Cusack for the goalkeeping position.
Fitzgerald said that he had felt fairly confident of gaining inclusion on the basis of his consistency in the league and the championship. However, his selection ahead of Cusack has caused uproar in Cork hurling circles.
“The way I looked at it, I thought I had a very good year,” the Clare custodian said.
“I had a very good league final and I thought I made some crucial saves against Waterford and two against Cork. I would admit I was up against two very good goalies in Donal Og Cusack and Damien Fitzhenry, but I thought I probably deserved it on my consistency throughout the year.”
Having missed out on the award a few times in the past, Fitzgerald said that he could easily relate to how Cusack would have reacted to the announcement of the team.
“You would not feel right if you did not feel disappointed. Donal Og is a great leader of the Cork guys.
“Certainly he has a lot of things going for him and he has a lot of attributes to his game. Naturally he would feel very disappointed at being left out, but I think the facts will stand out for themselves.”
