Lockys Brush with Eurovision Fame | | Tuesday, 20th February 2007 | | Submitted by Administrator | A YOUNG SIXMILEBRIDGE man has narrowly missed out on being selected to write the song for Ireland’s Eurovision entry this year.
Kieran O’Loughlin (33), who resides in Sweden, is a singer/songwriter. He entered a traditional music song to represent Ireland in the contest later this year.
He was shortlisted, to the last 33, but has just been informed that he hasn’t made the final cut.
Kieran, a son of Kevin and Dolores O’Loughlin, moved from his native Sixmilebridge to Stockholm in 1994 and since then has enjoyed huge success as a singer/songwriter.
Kieran has played a lot in Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Holland and Germany. He writes his own songs, plays his guitar and sings Irish traditional music and country folk, in pubs in Scandinavia.
His love of music blossomed when he was a youngster in Sixmilebridge and he has never looked back since.
“From a very early age, I played the button and piano accordion,” he said.
His move to Stockholm came after he went on tour there with Limerick bank Celtic Fusion.
“I got a taste for it and stayed there. My dad says it was the longest tour I have ever been on,” he said.
He studied music for two years in Sweden and is now realising his lifelong ambition in music.
His interest in writing a song for the Eurovision has been on his mind for some time.
“I had done it twice before in Sweden. The Eurovision in Sweden is colossal. I sent in a song last year and got it into the final 250, out of 5,000 entries. I decided this time to send a song in to RTÉ, a traditional style song, and got shortlisted to the last 33,” he said.
“Being shortlisted was a major buzz, especially when I am not known and it was the first time I had entered in Ireland,” he said.
“I will be back next year with a bang. Being shortlisted would give me the motivation to do more,” he said.
Kieran will not rest on his laurels and has plans to continue working in the music industry.
He is now involved in producing an Irish show, in Stockholm, and will travel to the Faroe Islands on a music tour in April.
Kieran regularly visits his family in Sixmilebridge and catches up with old schoolfriends. He loves living in Scandinavia, but relishes travelling home three times a year.
