An experimental Clare side saw off the challenge off University College Cork in the Waterford Crystal Cup as Tony Considine began his term in charge of the Banner with a winning start at Meelick.
Clare began the match brightly and raced into a 0-6 o 0-1 lead with wing forward Declan O’Rourke tormenting the UCC defence as he finished the match with 0-4 points.
A Derek Quinn goal left Clare in a commanding position and it looked as if they would cruise to victory, but the students battled back during the second quarter to leave three points between the side at half time.
The difference between the teams in the second half was that Clare took their chances, while UCC squandered a number of good opportunities, which proved decisive.
Considine will be happy with his side’s performance especially with so many newcomers in the team. Their next out is against Kerry on Sunday, January 21st.
