Raising the Flag | | Friday, 13th June 2008 | | Submitted by Administrator | The raising of Kilmurry National School’s first ever Green Flag has been planned for this Friday, June 13 at 12.45 pm and the ceremony will be attended by local public representatives and members of Clare County Council.
This year there was a meeting of minds and a teaming of resources as pupils, teachers, parents and members of the Board of Management collaborated in a project designed to earn the school its inaugural green flag, the internationally recognised symbol for environmental conservation.
Students from third, fourth, fifth and sixth classes played their part in promoting
environmental awareness. Teacher Maeve Donnelly co-ordinated the project and was helped by school caretaker, Jimmy Conlon and Parents’ Council member, Teresa 0’Dea.
School principal, Peter Walsh said the project involved waste management through the concept of reduce, reuse and recycling and the students identified ways on how best to implement that strategy.
Mr Walsh said that students made a concerted effort to reduce the use of wrappers, compiled display and information boards and held class competitions in an effort to highlight the importance of waste management. The school now had its own compost which they used in the school garden.
