Sixmilebridge 0-10 v 1-15 Killanena
Intermediate Hurling Championship Round 2 @ Bodyke
Killanena overcame Sixmilebridge in this intermediate championship round 2 game played at Bodyke earlier today. It capped off a disappointing weekend for 'Bridge hurling teams with the minor and senior sides also tasting defeat. The pitch at Bodyke was in good condition with a swirling and strong breeze blowing across the field. Killanena elected to play with the wind in the first half and it worked to their advantage as they were to head in at the short whistle seven points to the good. Indeed, they raced out of the blocks the quickest with Mark Flaherty on the mark from a free and David McNamara also on target. The first meaningful Sixmilebridge attack of the game arrived in the 10th minute when Rory Liddane ran at the Killanena full back before hand passing across to Paul Corbett who spurned a goal chance.
It took Sixmilebridge fifteen minutes to get off the mark with Thomas Liddy firing over a free. However, by this stage Killanena had 0-6 on the board with Flaherty (65) and McNamara (two) adding to their earlier efforts. Sixmilebridge were guilty of some bad shooting during this period with a couple of harmless wides with their opponents more proficient in front of goal. The final fifteen minutes of the half saw Killanena outscore the 'Bridge by 0-4 to 0-2 with Flaherty (four) trading scores with Rory Liddane and Liddy.
The second half started with the 'Bridge on top with three Thomas Liddy placed ball efforts reducing the deficit. The lead was reduced to three in the 40th minute when a first time overhead strike from Stiofán Fitzpatrick went over the crossbar. Play was held up for a few minutes after this with Killanena keeper David Noone receiving treatment after an accidental collision with the 'Bridge captain. The momentum was certainly with the 'Bridge but they needed to be careful not to concede frees within scoring range with Flaherty on form. The latter got the 2010 champions off the mark in the 45th minute from a free before Michael Noone sent over another score two minutes later. Liddy and Noone swapped points before the game was ultimately sealed in the 53rd minute after Flaherty offloaded to David McNamara who gave Stephen Fleming no chance from close range to get the games only goal.
This put Killanena 1-13 to 0-8 ahead with time running out for Sixmilebridge. They did add on scores from Sam O'Sullivan and Conor Deasy but Flaherty (free) and Todd Kelsey replied back before the 'Bridge had claims for a penalty turned down in injury time with David O'Connor brought down. The woes continued for the 'Bridge as they finished the game with fourteen after Thomas Liddy was shown a red card by referee Johnny Healy in the fourth minute of added time.
This defeat means that our intermediates can not qualify for the quarter finals this year and they will need to beat Corofin in their last game to ensure they don't face into a relegation battle.
