Sixmilebridge 2.03 v Newmarket 2.15
Senior Championship Round 3
By: Rachel Whelan (Camogie Club PRO)
REFEREE: AIDAN RYAN (Parteen).
VENUE: CLARECASTLE, 1PM.
With both teams having already qualified for the county semi-final, Sunday’s match was a day to decide who the opposing opposition would be with Kilmaley and Clooney/Quin waiting on the other side. It was Sixmilebridge who opened the scoring with a point from international hockey player Naomi Carroll in the fourth minute. Newmarket responded with a point from Ruth Kaiser three minutes later after she added to a moving ball. Her sister Nikki pointed her first free of the game and Ruth again found the target to give Newmarket a two point lead mid-way through the first half. Newmarket continued to dominate with a point each from both Jenny Kelly and Deirdre Cassidy. Sixmilebridge kept in touch in the 20th minute with a Naomi Carroll point. Jenny Kelly added 2 more points to her personal tally from centre –forward but in the 29th minute Sixmilebridge thought they had grabbed a crucial lifeline with a goal from Naomi Carroll, Newmarket however had different ideas with Carol Kaiser immediately billowing the Sixmilebridge net to give Newmarket a five point lead at half-time. Sixmilebridge got off to a dream start in the second half; with centre back Maire McGrath winning the throw in and sending a long ball down the length of the field to corner forward Mairead Hyland who hit the target spot. It wasn’t until the 48th minute that the next score of the game would come through, this time a pointed free by Chloe Morey, to put the minimum between the sides. In the 52nd minute Nikki Kaiser got Newmarket’s first score of the second half, and the blues never looked back with a converted 45’and a free from Nikki Kaiser, a goal and a point for mid-fielder Carol O’Leary, a point from substitute Laura McMahon and 3 more converted frees from Nikki Kaiser gave Newmarket a convincing win over the Sixmilebridge girls’.
